Manmohan Singh funeral LIVE updates: Congress leaders pay last respects to former PM at AICC HQ in Delhi

The mortal remains of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were brought to the Congress headquarters in Delhi from his residence in a flower-bedecked vehicle on Saturday (December 28, 2024).

Dr. Singh’s mortal remains were kept at the Congress headquarters for party leaders and workers to pay their last respects to him. The former Prime Minister’s last rites will be at Nigambodh Ghat and his final journey will begin from the Congress headquarters.

The Congress, that had demanded the funeral to take place in a place where a memorial of Dr. Singh can be built, called it a “deliberate insult to the first Sikh Prime Minister of India”.

The Government has decided to allocate space for a memorial for former Prime Minister late Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Friday (December 27, 2024).

According to the MHA, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, immediately after the Cabinet meeting, communicated to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge that the Government will allocate space for the memorial.

On Friday, draped in the Tricolour, the former Prime Minister’s body was kept at his 3, Motilal Nehru Road residence for leaders and public to pay respects. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Modi, former President Ram Nath Kovind, BJP chief J. P. Nadda, the Home Minister and the Defence Minister were among those who offered their respects.

A seven-day national mourning will be observed throughout the country as a mark of respect to the former Prime Minister and during this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across India, the Union Home Ministry has announced.
